UPDATE: May 9

According to Worcester County District Attorney Joe Early Jr., and Leicester Police Chief Kenneth Antanavica, a man drove an SUV into the front doors of the Leicester Police Department and brandished what appeared to be a rifle shortly after 6 AM on Sunday, May 9.

Police shot the man, described as Caucasian and in his 20s.  The suspect was rendered medical attention and was taken by ambulance to Saint Vincent Hospital where he was declared dead.

Early said no other injuries occurred. He also said authorities will not release the name of the man at this time.

The man dove the SUV up the handicapped ramp to the front doors of the police station and rammed the doors several times. Almost the entire vehicle was within the front doors of the station, according to Antanavica.

Personnel at the Worcester Emergency Communications Center saw the man drive the vehicle into the doors on video in real time and reported the incident to Leicester Police.

As two Leicester Police Officers arrived at the scene, the man allegedly exited the vehicle and pointed what appeared to be a rifle at the officers, causing him to the shot.

Both officers are on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Massachusetts State Police.

Early said the Leicester Police knew of the man and that he had a pending court date on June 1 related to a traffic violation.

Early did not comment on a motive the man had for the incident.
