REPORT: Massachusetts Named 2nd Best State to Raise a Family

The personal-finance website WalletHub released its report on 2020’s Best & Worst States to Raise a Family and the Bay State nears the top of the list.

WalletHub compared the 50 states across 50 key indicators of family-friendliness. The data sets ranged from median family salary to housing affordability to unemployment rate.

Overall, Massachusetts ranked the second-best state to raise a family, falling behind only Minnesota.

Along with Massachusetts, a total of four New England states ranked among the Top 10 states to raise a family, including Vermont (#4), New Hampshire (#5) and Connecticutt (#9). Rhode Island and Maine were ranked #15 and #18, respectively.

Here’s how Massachusetts ranked across each data set:

Raising a Family in Massachusetts (1=Best; 25=Avg.):

  • 22nd – % of Families with Young Kids
  • 1st – Infant-Mortality Rate
  • 9th – Median Family Salary (Adjusted for Cost of Living)
  • 25th – Violent-Crime Rate
  • 10th – % of Families in Poverty
  • 14th – Unemployment Rate
  • 15th – Separation & Divorce Rate
