Utility bills for Massachusetts residents are the fifth-highest in the country, according to new report from the data experts at the personal finance website, WalletHub.
In their latest report — 2019’s Most & Least Energy Expensive States — WalletHub compared the average monthly energy bills in each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C.. using a formula that accounts for the following residential energy types: electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating oil.
Massachusetts ranked the fifth-most expensive in the country with an average monthly energy bill of $336 — falling behind only Georgia ($344), Alaska ($359), Wyoming ($363) and Connecticut ($373).
The average monthly cost in the Bay State for individual utilities are:
- Electricity: $125
- Natural Gas: $52
- Motor Fuel: $116
- Home Heating Oil: $44
Energy Consumption & Costs in Massachusetts (1=Most Expensive; 25=Avg.):
- Avg. Monthly Energy Bill: $336
- 4th – Price of Electricity
- 13th – Price of Natural Gas
- 17th – Natural-Gas Consumption per Consumer
- 21st – Price of Motor Fuel
- 7th – Price of Home Heating Oil
- 5th – Home Heating-Oil Consumption per Consumer
Although Massachusetts has the fourth-highest electricity costs, residents in the state consume the fifth-lowest amount of electrical energy per customer in the country.
Massachusetts is also ranked the sixth-lowest in the country for monthly spending on gasoline for their vehicles.
