WORCESTER – Early Sunday morning, Worcester Police officers arrested 34-year-old Jesus Rivera-Diaz on multiple gun charges and for resisting arrest after being chased from behind St. Peter’s Parish on Main St.

According to the Worcester Police Department [WPD], around 3 AM on Sunday, officers were dispatched to 98 Southgate St. for a report of a ShotSpotter activation. Shortly after the shots were heard, officers were told that at white Toyota 4 Runner was fleeing the area at a high rate of speed.

An officer saw the vehicle parked at the corner of Grand and Cheney streets behind the church. A large group of people were inside and surrounding the vehicle.

Officers observed Rivera-Diaz, of 18 Newbury St. #2, come out from behind the church. The WPD says Rivera-Diaz looked alarmed and reached his hand into his waistband as if to conceal a firearm and then ran away.

Officers chased him on foot. Rivera-Diaz stopped to face the officers while holding his waistband. An officer reached Rivera-Diaz and told him to place his hands behind his back. A firearm fell from Rivera-Diaz’s waistband and Rivera-Diaz reached for it. The officer kicked the firearm away and placed Rivera-Diaz under arrest.

The firearm had a defaced serial number and Rivera-Diaz does not have a License to Carry firearms in Massachusetts.

Rivera-Diaz was placed under arrest for Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm, Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device, Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card, Possession of a Defaced Serial Number Firearm in a Felony, and Resisting Arrest.

He will be arraigned in Worcester District Court.
