MassHealth Moves to Remove Worcester Nursing Home

WORCESTER – MassHealth has issued an initial termination notices to three Massachusetts nursing homes including Hermitage Healthcare at 383 Mill St. in Worcester.

The other facilities are Town and Country in Lowell and Wareham Healthcare in Wareham.

The termination notice is the first step to eliminate a provider from the MassHealth program, which could cause the facility to close.

The Nursing Facility Task Force, established by state law in July 2019, found that the three all three facilities had performed poorly in audits and survey.

The Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) reviewed these facilities’ performance on audits and surveys and found each had:

  • Inadequate staffing levels and hours per patient day (HPPD) below the industry standard
  • Poor COVID-19 baseline testing and reporting compliance
  • Lack of cooperation with state supports and audits during the COVID-19 emergency, including non-adherence to baseline testing of staff and residents and in certain cases, refusal of infection control assistance when the state had identified a need

Each of these facilities have an opportunity to respond and request a hearing to dispute the findings.
