Worcester- Mayor Joseph Petty has named Oct. 15, 2017, Dr. Deirdre J. Loughlin Day to honor the longtime public employee’s years of dedicated service to the city of Worcester.
Loughlin, known by her students for her positivity and sense of humor, worked as a Worcester Public Schools Employee for over forty years. She taught science at North and South High before joining the School Department as Manager of Curriculum and Staff Development. Loughlin retired in 2002, returning in 2008 to serve as interim superintendent.
In June 2016, the School Committee dedicated North High’s library in Loughlin’s honor. Spurred by the dedication, the Dr. Deirdre J. Loughlin Day Committee (DDJLDC) partnered with the MA Audubon Society at Worcester’s Broad Meadow Brook Conservation & Wildlife Sanctuary to create a fund in Loughlin’s name. The fund will provide support for programs for students and teachers in the Worcester Public Schools.
A 5K Race & Walk, as well as a fundraising event, will be held on Oct. 15 to celebrate Loughlin’s contributions to the city. The 3.1 mile race, mostly flat, begins at Worcester Fitness and loops around Indian Lake. Registration begins at $30. Proceeds from tickets sold for both events will benefit the Dr. Deirdre J. Loughlin Education Fund.
