WORCESTER – The City of Worcester received notice that 13 taxpayers filed a lawsuit that challenges the construction of the new Doherty High School.

Mayor Joe Petty issued a statement on Thursday, April 7, responding to the notice of the lawsuit.

According to Petty, “In essence, the lawsuit contests a 1961 decree by the Supreme Judicial Court allowing those 20 acres of former Newton Hill park land to be used for school purposes.”

The plan for the new Doherty High School building sits the building on that same parcel.

Petty also said the City Council and School Committee are confident in the City’s legal position to construct the new building and that they “… will not be intimidated by the lawsuit.”

“Work on the project will continue uninterrupted,” said Petty. “Both the City Council and the School Committee are committed to the timely delivery of a new state-of-the-art high school that the community, and the Doherty students, desire and deserve.”
