WORCESTER – Mayor Joe Petty announced the next superintendent of Worcester Public Schools, Dr. Rachel Monárrez on Thursday, April 28, after a school committee selection vote. Dr. Monárrez was the only bilingual person among the four finalist candidates.
Dr. Monárrez comes to Worcester from the San Bernardino (CA) City Unified School District, where she serves as Deputy Superintendent. She visited the Worcester School Committee for her final interview on Thursday, the same day of the announcement.

Monárrez has also been Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for City Schools in the Santa Rosa, California, and principle of the Unified School District of Pamona, California.
Monárrez is the only finalist candidate for the position who is bi-lingual.
Monárrez holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Education with an emphasis on urban education and a Masters of Arts in Education from Claremont Graduate University. She earned a Bachelor of Art in History from the University of California, Irvine.
