BOSTON – Governor Maura Healey announced the selection of Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Noble, retired from the New Jersey State Police (NJSP), as the next colonel of the Massachusetts State Police (MSP).
The selection of Noble comes after Healey appointed a search committee in March, and engaging a national search firm to support the search. The search committee included Gayle Cameron, the former Commissioner of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Cameron also previously served as Lieutenant Colonel of the New Jersey State Police, the same position later held by Noble.
“Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Noble is a principled, respected leader who is widely praised for his integrity, compassion and ability to bring people together,” said Healey. “I’m confident that he is the leader that our hardworking State Police team and the people of Massachusetts deserve.”
Noble served with the NJSP from 1995 to 2022. He was born and raised in Rhode Island. He currently lives in New Jersey and will move to Massachusetts.
He most recently served as deputy superintendent, the second highest ranking position within the NJSP, from 2018 to 2022. In that role, he served as chief of staff and supported the superintendent in oversight of all Division operations, including Administration, Operations, Homeland Security, Emergency Management, Training, Professional Standards and Investigations. He also implemented the Office of Employee Relations and Community Outreach.
At the rank of Major, Noble served as Major as the Commander of the Forensic and Technical Services Section. In that role, he managed the operations of five regional state crime laboratories. He was appointed to the position after a systemic failure that had resulted in the dismissal of thousands of cases. Systems he designed while in that role led to the elimination of a 17,000 case backlog.
Throughout his tenure with the NJSP, Noble’s assignments included uniformed patrol, field training officer and detective. He investigated narcotics, official corruption, organized crime and homicide.
The New Jersey Attorney General also appointed Noble as Commander of the New Jersey Attorney General’s Shooting Response Team, which investigated the use of deadly force by police.
Prior to joining the NJSP, Noble served two years as a summer police officer in Nantucket.
Since retiring in 2022, he worked for Inter-Con Security, a private security firm, as regional president. In that role, he ran private security programs at JFK International Airport, LaGuardia International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and the World Trade Center.
Noble earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and a Master of Arts in Education from Seton Hall University. He also graduated from the FBI National Academy.
Noble’s tenure as colonel will begin in October. He currently lives in New Jersey, but will relocate to Massachusetts.
Healey and Public Safety and Security Secretary Terrence Reidy also thanked Interim MSP Colonel Jack Mawn for his service. He served as interim colonel since February 2023.
