This old grumbly fan is sad after the Red Sox season ended in a loss to the dreaded Yankees in a 4-0 shutout loss.

Rookie Cam Schlittler, the son of Needham Police Chief John Schlittler, went 8 spectacular innings for the Yankees, throwing 107 pitches, allowing 5 hits, striking out 12 and walking none.

The Red Sox had no serious offensive threats throughout the game, scattering 5 hits and 1 walk.

The Yankees scored all of their runs in the 4th inning, which featured 2 defensive blunders by the Red Sox.

Red Sox rookie pitcher Connelly Early went 3.2 innings, and despite pitching well, couldn’t get out of the fourth. Two misplayed balls by the Red Sox led to a base loaded situation and a call to the bullpen.

The Red Sox finished the regular season 89-73, and head into an offseason with a ton of young players and uncertainty around free agent Alex Bregman, who played poorly down the stretch for the Red Sox.

The team played much better overall after trading longtime star Rafael Devers early in the season and calling up young superstar Roman Anthony.
