WORCESTER – A local man has pleaded guilty to child pornography charges in federal court in Worcester.

Oliver Smith, 47, of Sutton, pleaded guilty to a single count of possession of child pornography on March 1. Federal District Court Judge Mark Mastroianni scheduled sentencing for Aug. 11.

The national Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Swedish law enforcement provided federal authorities with information that led to a search warrant at Smith’s residence in Sutton in November 2020. That search led to the seizure of electronic devices.

According to federal prosecutors, a memory card found at Smith’s residence and an email address Smith had access to both had images depicting child pornography.

Smith also allegedly email with child pornography from one email address he controlled to another while he lived in Sweden in July 2019.

The charge of possession of child pornography provides for up to 20 years in prison with a mandatory minimum of five years, up to life of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
