The Pawtucket Red Sox will not play during the 2020 season.
Randy Mobley, President of the International League, the Triple A level of Major League Baseball, announced on Tuesday, June 30, that players will not be assigned to team rosters this season.
Founded in 1884, the International League has never had a year with no games played. The 2020 season will be the first in 137 years.
Mobley said the league based the decision on the many COVID-19 related challenges that would come with hosting games.
The Paw Sox said they will explore ways to have an appropriate farewell to McCoy Stadium, where the team has played for 50 years.
The PawSox will move its home venue to Worcester at the start of the 2021 season.
PawSox Club President Dr. Charles Steinberg said that there has been contact with the Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien and other public officials about alternative uses for the Stadium this summer.
The Boston Red Sox are scheduled to play a 60 game season starting July 23. McCoy Stadium has been mentioned as a potential training facility leading up to the start of the season.
