After 48-Day Delay, Construction Resumes at Polar Park

WORCESTER – For the first time in nearly 50 days, construction continued at the future home of the Worcester Red Sox on Monday.

Due to the City of Worcester’s decision on April 1 to halt city-sponsored construction projects in an abundance of caution regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, construction was delayed for seven weeks.

However, last week the City announced that projects like Polar Park and construction of the new South High Community high school could resume this week.

Workers at Polar Park resumed construction on Monday.

In a released statement, Chairman and Principal Owner of the Worcester Red Sox, Larry Lucchino said, “When the city halted construction, we understood that the health and safety of our workers was paramount. We had faith that the stoppage would be temporary. We are all therefore pleased by the city’s news.

“We will support our local construction workers, and we will abide by the conditions set forth by our leaders to ensure an environment that complies with their public policy and expert medical recommendations,” Lucchino said.

Polar Park is expected to open in April 2021.
