WORCESTER – The installation of over 6,000 fixed seats in Polar Park began on Tuesday, January 12, including cast-iron designs on the end of each row inspired by the Worcester Worcesters.

The Worcesters joined the National League in 1880, four years after it launched in 1876. Worcesters’ J. Lee Richmond threw a perfect game on June 12, 1880, the first in Major League History, at the Worcester Agricultural Fairgrounds. Becker College sits on the site today. The team played in the National League until 1882.

The Worcesters’ inspired design on the end of each row is part of the end standards, the cast iron risers to which seats will be attached.

The art includes the 1880 Worcester Worcesters’ distinctive “W” on a heart overlaying crossed bats.  The expression, “Heart of the Commonwealth,” follows the curves inside the heart and is flanked below by the official name of the franchise, the “Worcester Baseball Club,” on a banner.
