The Worcester Railers traveled across the country for their longest road trip of the season, and in their only regular season game against the Colorado Eagles, fell 5-1 in front of the listed crowd of 4,421 at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, CO.
The first period set the tone for a very aggressive, but entertaining game with several fights and over a dozen penalties handed out. Yannick Turcotte picked up his fourth fighting major at 3:43 and Mike Cornell picked up his first fighting major at 19:06. Colorado’s Joey Ratelle and Jake Marto scored within a minute of each other in less than 10 minutes remaining in the first.
Colorado added to their lead two minutes into the second period, a one-timer past Gillam brought their lead to 3-0. In a mostly quiet third period, each team made 10 shots on goal and Colorado served the lone penalty for hooking, six minutes into the period.
Patrick McNally scored the Railers’ lone goal at 2:49 in the third period, which was assisted by Kellen Jones. However, the Eagles retaliated with two more goals 5 minutes in, and another with 5 minutes remaining in the period. A period which echoed the first, a line brawl broke out with less than three minutes remaining resulted in 124 penalty minutes being issued and game misconducts to Railers’ Cornell, Kubiak, Turcotte, and Hudson.
The Railers’ west coast trip continues with two games in Salt Lake City on Friday and Saturday against the Utah Grizzlies.
Scratched players for tonight were Connor Doherty, Eamon McAdam, Josh Monk, Wade Murphy, and Nick Saracino.
Alex Vazzano was dressed as the team’s emergency backup goaltender. Goalie Eamon McAdam is still recovering from injury sustained the in the team’s home opener on October 14. However, McAdam travelled with the team on the West Coast trip.
Railers tallied a total of 101 penalty minutes in Wednesday’s game. Combined with Colorado’s penalty minutes, 182 were issued in the game which is the most in any ECHL game this season. In addition, Cornell, Kubiak, Turcotte, and Hudson all faced game misconducts and could face suspensions in the coming days.
Turcotte has the most penalty minutes in the ECHL, with 53 minutes in three games.
This will be the only regular season matchup between the Railers and Colorado Eagles. The Eagles will join the AHL (American Hockey League) as the league’s 31st franchise.
