WORCESTER – In October 2020, Cathy Nally was diagnosed with ALS, a neurodegenerative disease that weakens muscles and limits physical function.

Cathy is the widowed daughter-in-law of the late James Nally, the former Worcester fire chief who retired in 1987. Chief Nally died in 2012. His son and Cathy’s husband, John Nally, died in 2001.

Family and friends are hosting the first annual “Rally 4 Nally” and are asking the community to come together to help lighten the financial burden for Cathy and her family.

For most ALS patients, the disease ultimately confines the patient to a wheelchair and requires around the clock support. The care they need combined with the prescribed medication can exceed $100,000 annually.

The first annual Rally 4 Nally will take place on January 8, 2022 with a polar plunge at Carson Beach in South Boston at 1 PM and a reception at Venezia in Dorchester at 2 PM.

Fundraising efforts have already started online, raising nearly $37,000 of the fundraisers $100,000 target goal as of Tuesday morning.
