According to ESPN’s Pedro Gomez, free agent J.D. Martinez agreed to a five-year, $110 million deal with the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.
Martinez had been rumored to be coming to Boston for much of the offseason – but it was originally reported he wanted close to seven years, $200 million, according to his agent, Scott Boras.
The 30-year-old played in just 62 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks after being traded there from the Detroit Tigers last season and collected 29 home runs with 65 RBI. He had a total of 45 home runs and 104 RBI with a .303 batting average for the entire 2017 season.
Martinez will have two opt-outs in his contract with the deal being front-loaded with him set to receive $50 million the first two years.
