The Massachusetts Department of Transportation [MassDOT] announced on Tuesday, June 1, that many of the initiatives it initiated at the Registry of Motor Vehicles [RMV] in response to the COVID-19 pandemic will continue after Massachusetts lifted restrictions.

RMV customers will continue to be served by appointments only at open Service Centers, while face covering requirements remain for unvaccinated customers.

Other policies that continue include dedicated hours each Wednesday continue to be reserved for senior citizens, suspension hearing by phone, learner’s permit tests online and state vehicle use for road tests.

All individuals in a vehicle during a road test must wear a mask.

AAA, an RMV partner for many transactions, continues serving its member by appointment.

  • Road tests conducted using state vehicles only. Road test sponsors required to be in the road test vehicle beginning on Tuesday, June 15. Everyone in a road test vehicle must wear a face covering regardless of vaccination status.
  • Registration Drop Off Centers for drop off and pick up service for vehicle transactions will continue.
