WORCESTER – A shooting from at around 6 PM near Institute Park, during the 10th Annual Worcester Caribbean American Carnival, led to the early closing of the park and the event on Sunday, Aug. 27. The Worcester Police Department (WPD), responding to calls from the event’s staff and volunteers, secured the park at around 6:30 PM.

According to witnesses at the scene, the shooting took place across Salisbury Street from the park, on Boynton St. The shooting came along the side of one of the frat houses on the WPI campus. According to the WPD, the gunshots came from the area of Salisbury and Boynton St.

Several witnesses confirm the assailants fled, and the WPD was in pursuit.

WPD says a 15-year-old teen and 23-year-old suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds during the incident.

Caribbean American Carnival lead organizer Jennifer Gaskin, gave a short statement on Facebook Live that rejected violence and stated her and the Worcester Caribbean American Carnival board’s hope for a recovery for the two injured. From every possible source, the carnival was a success and the violence was not associated with it in any way.

A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the investigation is in its early stages, but the information points to an unrelated conflict that began several streets away before making it to the area of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
