The Shrewsbury Fire Department has been given nearly $10,000 to enhance its emergency sheltering services for the town’s residents, especially those who need additional assistance.

Fire Chief James Vuona and Emergency Management Director Seth Colby announced on Friday that the town was awarded a $9,999 Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) to strengthen the community’s emergency readiness. The grant is distributed  by the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).

As a result of a Threat Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (THIRA), Shrewsbury identified the need for increased preparedness and logistical support for emergency sheltering operations. The assessment identified gaps in emergency sheltering capabilities for people who need additional assistance, such as those with mobility, cognitive or sensory challenges.

The fire department will use this money to buy vital emergency sheltering equipment and a mobile trailer to allow for rapid deployment and logistical support in the event emergency sheltering services are needed.

Funds will also be used to purchase equipment and supplies that will improve emergency shelters for those requiring additional assistance including: cots to accommodate all demographics, patient lift assist equipment, wheelchairs, privacy screens and medical equipment. New and existing emergency sheltering locations will also undergo a review of their suitability to ensure compliance with the standards outlined within the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

“We are thankful to have been awarded this grant as it will allow us to provide improved sheltering equipment to those in need during an emergency,” Chief Vuona said. “The funding will have a significant impact on our operational readiness and will help us address the needs of the community that were identified by the risk assessment.”
