Snow Showers, Squalls Expected this Afternoon in Worcester

UPDATE –

As of 1 pm this afternoon, an area of snow squalls is pushing eastward across Westernmost parts of Mass. These squalls will push across the entire Pioneer Valley/I-91 corridor of Western Mass from Greenfield southward all the way to Springfield between 1:30 pm and 2 pm this afternoon.

These snow squalls will then push eastward along the Mass Pike & the Route 2 corridor reaching areas from Sturbridge northward into the western Worcester Hills around 2:30 pm or so before possibly reaching areas from the Worcester Metro northward to Fitchburg around 3 pm.

Expect a sudden reduction in visibility to as low as one-half of a mile, brief gusty winds of up to 25 to 35 mph and a quick coating of snow accumulation.

Snow squalls can often lead to accidents, especially on highways, since road conditions and visibility can change rapidly in a very short distance. Slow down if you encounter a snow squall & avoid braking suddenly.

WORCESTER – Much of the day today will feature more clouds than sunshine and it will become quite windy this afternoon.

One thing that I am watching closely is an area of snow showers and snow squalls that are associated with the eastward moving cold front.

These snow showers and snow squalls are expected to move across Western Massachusetts from 1 PM to 3 PM this afternoon and then move across Central Massachusetts from 2 PM to 4 P this afternoon. These snow showers and snow squalls will bring with them a short period of heavy snow with strong wind gusts of up to 40-50 mph. This combination will lead to whiteout conditions in some very localized areas.

In addition, any snow showers and snow squalls may deposit a quick inch or so of snow accumulation in some areas.

If you are traveling this afternoon, use extreme caution if you encounter any snow showers or snow squalls as road conditions may become quite slippery very quickly.

In addition, very low visibility will be likely with any snow showers or snow squalls making driving tough in areas that are being impacted by them.

I will be watching the snow shower/snow squall potential closely & will keep you updated as needed.

High temperatures today will be near 40 Degrees.

Winds today will be southwest at 10 to 15 mph the rest of this morning and will become West to Northwest and increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 to 45 mph this afternoon.
