SOUTHBRIDGE – Police in Southbridge pursued Ramon G. Vazquez, 32, of Southbridge, into a river leading to his arrest for heroin distribution and other charges on Tuesday, October 6.
Police observed Vazquez meet with two individuals near Randolph St. and Green Ave around 6:30 PM. When Vazquez noticed police, he began to retreat to a nearby vehicle.
When police attempted to speak with Vazquez he fled, jumped over a nearby chain link fence and fell some 10 feet into a river.
As the pursuit on foot continued, Vazquez began removing items from his pockets and leaving them behind.
The officer in pursuit was able to detain Vazquez until a second officer arrived to assist. Vazquez was eventually secured in handcuffs and transferred to the police state.
During a search of the river, officers were able to recover 10 bundles of a substance they believe is heroin, packaged for distribution.
One officer was treated for injuries an released.
Vazquez faces charges of:
- Distribution of a Class A Substance [heroin]
- Resisting Arrest
- Disorderly Conduct
- Disturbing the Peace
