WORCESTER – Parts of Grafton Street were closed for nearly five hours on Tuesday night after police responded to reports of a suspicious package.
Police responded to Cumberland Farms, at 263 Grafton St., after the report around 6 PM of a suspicious package near a gas pump outside the store. Worcester Police created a perimeter, including closing Grafton Street from Water Street to Cutler Street, during the investigation.
The Massachusetts State Police (MSP) Bomb Squad responded to the scene to support Worcester officers.
Troopers from the MSP Bomb Squad deployed a robot to move the package away from the area of the gas pumps, then safely detonated.
According to the Worcester Police Department, the package appeared to be a hoax device without explosive properties.
Police reopened Grafton Street at around 10:50 PM.
