WORCESTER – “Stunning”. “Fragrant”. “Inspired”. Just a few of the words used by guests of last night’s Flora Preview Reception for Swept Away at the Worcester Art Museum.
Now in it’s 16th year, Flora in Winter is one of the museums, and the regions, most anticipated events. This years theme, Flora Reimagined Swept Away, is inspired by Coming Away: Winslow Homer and England, currently on display at the museum. Local arrangers have exquisitely set a mood, and created an emotional environment connecting the theme to the guests to the art. At every turn you are reminded through color, texture, and the beautifully combined scents of the different flora, that in any setting, flowers have the power to enchant. Live music in the Renaissance Court added to the elegant garden feel of the evening, which was the perfect kick-off to this four day event. The perfect peek into a much awaited Spring.
Flora also provides museum goers with the perfect opportunity to view the Winslow Homer exhibit that is the inspiration for the event. Developed around two iconic Homer paintings—the Worcester Art Museum’s The Gale (1883-93) and the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Hark! The Lark (1882)—the exhibition Coming Away: Winslow Homer and England explores the artist’s time in Cullercoats, England, in 1881 and 1882, and features the most comprehensive group of oils made during or emerging directly from Homer’s time abroad.
Flora in Winter runs through the weekend, from January 25th-28th, and has something for every art and flower lover to enjoy. From public tours that need no reservations, creating origami flowers with children and families, a Paint Nite in the Museum Cafe, a workshop for designing arrangements at home, and a concert by the Seele Musicale Chamber Ensemble on Sunday, it’s an exciting, inspiring, educational weekend to visit WAM.
Admission to Flora in Winter is FREE for members during exhibition hours. For non-members the admission fee is $22 for adults and $6 for youth during exhibition hours. Some events have additional fees. Please check the museum website for information specific to this event www.worcesterart.org
