WORCESTER – Local online news and entertainment platform, The 016, has been awarded a $5,000 Facebook Journalism Project Community Network grant.

The 016 is one of just 50 local newsrooms across the United States and Canada to receive a grant.

The grant is made available through a partnership between the Lenfest Institute, The Facebook Journalism Project and the Local Media Association.

The 016 will use the grant to help cover the unexpected costs of reporting on the COVID-19 crisis in Worcester.

“In this trying time, the volume of important information people need and want strains all organizations that strive to provide timely, accurate and fair information,” said Mark Henderson, CEO and Founder of The 016. “Our job is to put these resources to work in and for the community of Greater Worcester as quickly and efficiently as possible. We are extremely grateful to the Facebook Journalism Project, The Lenfest Institute and the Local Media Association for their support.”

“The grants…are designed to provide rapid-response assistance for the coverage of this fast-moving news story,” Jim Friedlich from the Lenfest Institute of Journalism said in announcing the grant program

More of the grants — which are $5,000 each — will be announced in early April.

“These grants will go a long way to help them provide vital information to their communities,” said Nancy Lane, CEO of Local Media Association.
