As COVID-19 cases decline, the number of residents vaccinated rises and travel and gathering restrictions end, many will begin travelling again.
AAA, a regional auto club, reported it expects to see a 60 percent increase in Memorial Day weekend travel in 2021 compared to last year. Statewide agencies, like the Massachusetts Department of Transportation [MassDOT], warned of a sharp increase in travel this Memorial Day weekend.
Both said they predict the increase most represented by travel by car.
If your family expects to travel this holiday weekend, it is important that thinking about your vehicle returns to top of mind.
Tire Penny Test
The folks at Sullivan Tire and Auto Service provide the following at-home test to ensure your tires meet the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association standard for minimum tread depth of 2/32 of an inch.
Insert a penny between your tires tread with Lincoln’s head facing you and pointing down. If you see all of his head, your depth is less than the minimum standard.
Has Your Vehicle Sat Idle?
If your vehicle has sat idle for some time, here are some other concerns to look out for before travelling, according to Sullivan Tire:
Tires: Sitting vehicles can affect tire pressure, cause slow leaks and allow flat or bald spots to form.
Gas Tank: If you haven’t kept the tank full, check for condensation.
Car Battery: If you haven’t been starting or driving you vehicle the battery may be dead or die quickly.
Car Brakes: when a car sits for too long, brake rotors can begin to rust.
Fluid Levels: some fluids can evaporate over time and oil that sits too long and doesn’t circulate it can deteriorate and lead to costly problems.
