AAA Travel, a federation of 30 motor clubs and 1,000 North American branch offices, expects an increase of 60 percent of Memorial Day holiday weekend travelers this year.

According to AAA’s expects over 37 million people to travel 50 miles or more from May 27 through May 31.

In 2020, 23 million travelled over memorial day weekend. That was the lowest total on record since AAA began recording in 2000.

AAA noted in their expectation that the number of travelers could shift with an increase in cases attributed to COVID-19 variants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] current guidance says fully vaccinated people can travel domestically at low risk to themselves with proper precautions. An uptick in variant related cases could undermine public confidence in that guidance.

CDC for travelers not fully vaccinated includes maintaining social distancing, wearing a mask, hand washing and being tested before travel.

Regulations require all travelers wear a mask during domestic or international travel on planes, buses, trains and other public transportation as well as when travelling to or when within transportation hubs like airports and stations.

AAA Travel report significant recent increases in online traffic and bookings for hotels and car rentals heading into summer.

Travelers should expect increases in cost due to the rising price of fuel. Accelerated demand combined with the Colonial Pipeline, which delivers 45% of fuel to the East Coast,  being offline due to a cyberattack. At the pump, consumers could see prices rise to over $3 per gallon.
