WORCESTER – UMass Memorial Hospital announced on Monday, August 23, that it purchased a property on Plantation Street where it will add acute care medical-surgical beds.

The building, at 378 Plantation Street, is the former home of the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center.

According to a statement from the hospital, adding acute care medical-surgical beds is a top strategic priority and a project to add 200 new beds on its current campus is still five to ten years away.

Converting the property to an inpatient, acute-care facility will require approval from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The property at 378 Plantation Street requires significant renovations and modifications before suitable as an inpatient facility.

Leaders at the medical center are evaluating options to expedite the process and bring the new beds online quickly and safely.

Eric Dickson, MD, president and CEO of UMass Memorial Health said, “I believe the more we do to alleviate the pressure and strain on its resources and caregivers, the better our capacity to keep patients in the region getting quality care close to home. It’s better for patients, their families and the hospitals in our region.”
