WORCESTER – A mental health facility near downtown Worcester is closing on July 18, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health [DPH].

As ThisWeekinWorcester.com reported on Tuesday, April 9, Royal Spring Valley, an 82-bed mental health facility located at 81 Chatham St., is shutting its doors after nearly 30 years. Royal Spring Valley is part of the Royal Health Group and offers mental health and nursing and rehabilitation services.

A representative from the DPH told ThisWeekinWorcester.com that Royal Spring Valley Center notified the DPH of its intent to voluntarily close and submitted its draft closure plan on March 19, 2019.

Royal Spring Valley told the DPH that they have provided the required notice to the family or responsible party on file for its residents.

A public hearing has been scheduled for April 17, 2019 at 5:30 PM at the AC Marriott Hotel at 125 Front St in Worcester.

Within 14 days following the public hearing, DPH will complete its review of the closure plan and the public comments received at the hearing and either issue approval or, if necessary, request additional information from Royal Spring Valley about the draft closure plan.

Upon DPH approval of the closure plan, and at least 60 days prior to the closure, Royal Spring Valley must freeze new admissions to the facility and provide each party that received initial notice of intent to close with notification of DPH’s approval, the approved closure date, and notice the facility will close. This must also be posted in the facility. At that time, Royal Spring Valley can begin the transfer of residents in an orderly manner.

On Tuesday, facility administrator Linda Rameau confirmed with ThisWeekinWorcester.com that the facility was closing but did not give any further information or reasons why the facility is closing.  According to a source, some patients have already moved out of the facility and others are being offered spaces at other locations run by Royal Health Group

The Worcester center — which opened in 1990 — is one of 16 facilities run by the Royal Health Group.
