29% Voter Turnout for Primary Elections in Worcester

WORCESTER – On Primary Election Day on Tuesday, September 1, a total of 30,926 of the City’s 107,421 registered voters cast ballots for a turnout of 28.79%.

The closest watched race statewide was for the nominee of the Democratic Party for U.S. Senator. In Worcester, Joseph Kennedy III edge out incumbent Ed Markey by 1,033 votes.

Markey won that race, beating Kennedy statewide by nearly 11 percentage points.

Two candidates were also on the Republican Party ballot for U.S. Senator. Kevin O’Connor won the race against Shiva Ayyadurai. O’Connor won 59% of the ballots cast in Worcester, about one percentage point below his total statewide.

The race for the Democratic Party nominee for Governor’s Council in District 7, which covers most of Worcester County, saw Paul DePaulo win 61% of the vote against Padraic Rafferty in Worcester. The results were also about one percentage point different from the total across the district.

Democrats competing for Register of Probate in Worcester County saw John Dolan III win 65% of the vote against Kasia Wennerberg in Worcester. The race was much closer county-wide, where Dolan won 53% of the vote across the county.

The rest of the races were uncontested in Worcester.

On party ballot selection, 26,589 voters chose the Democrat ballot and 4,177 chose the Republicans ballot in Worcester. The Libertarian Party had 126 ballots cast while the green party had 34 cast.
