WORCESTER – Soft spoken, reserved, focused, is what you’ll notice when you meet Karen Brown… but don’t be fooled. While possessing all of these qualities, Karen is a brilliant female entrepreneur in a male dominated industry, and one of only 14 women in the world who hold the rank of Grand Master in Tae Kwon Do.

A business owner in Worcester for over 22 years, her martial arts school, Hanmi Tae Kwon Do Center, is a family affair. The only school in the area taught by a family of Black Belts, Grand Master Brown and her four children work together every day making a positive impact on their students, and their community, through Tae Kwon Do.

This Week in Worcester had the opportunity to speak with Grand Master Brown about her journey, her creative approach to business, and why she chose to sponsor Worcester’s most creative, focused, networking event for women.

Can you share with us a bit about your business and how you got started?

“I am Grand Master Karen Brown and I got started training in Tae Kwon Do 42 years ago when my younger cousin was being bullied.  His grandmother suggested martial arts so he could defend himself and I was asked to go with him. I fell in love with Tae Kwon Do after the first lesson.  Needless to say Tae Kwon Do has been my life ever since. I have done it all—national competitor, demonstration team member, instructor, tournament director, school owner, community leader and now Grand Master on the cover of Tae Kwon Do Times Magazine.  My school, Hanmi Tae Kwon Do Center, is the Leading Martial Arts School in Worcester County.”

What brought you to Ladies Night Out Worcester and what do you like about it?

“Allison Hale, the master mind behind Ladies Night Out and Nuance Networking is my Tae Kwon do student, a Black Belt, and good friend.  Her desire to help women in business and give them an opportunity to network, and share their experiences and ideas with other women, inspires me to be a better community leader.  Being a woman in business, I know how difficult it is to juggle the responsibilities of home, children, and partners, all while trying to grow a successful business. Allison Hale’s Ladies Night Out gives us a venue where we can come together, introduce our products or services, and support our fellow women business owners.  I am proud to be a part of the event.”

Where can people interested in coming to Hanmi Tae Kwon Do for classes find you?

“My school, Hanmi Tae Kwon Do Center, is located at 98 West Boylston Street,  Worcester, MA . If you are interested in Martial Arts for yourself or your children, please call us at 508-770-1187 or visit our web site www.hanmitaekwondo.com .”
