WORCESTER – The Worcester Red Sox took the series lead against the Syracuse Mets and pulled one game within a .500 record (4-5) on Thursday, May 13, with a 7-4 win at Polar Park.

Jarren Duran got the game started, leading off the first with a single and stealing second. A one out Chris Herrmann single brought Duran home to put Worcester up one after one inning.

Worcester starting pitcher Stephen Gonsales struck out the first two batters in the second, but walked the next two before Mets first baseman David Thompson took a 2-1 pitch out of Polar Park to left field.

In the third inning Jake Hager hit Gonsalves’ 1-0 pitch over the fence in right center field to put the Mets up 4-1 after three innings.

Worcester pitching closed out the Mets after the fourth inning through the rest of the game.

Worcester started chipping away in the fourth. Herrmann led off with a double and a Yairo Munoz sacrifice bunt moved him to third. A Michael Gettys single closed the gap to 4-2.

Worcester came right back in the fifth with a Jack Lopez single and Josh Ockimey home run to right center field to tie the game.

Worcester chipped itself into the lead for good in the 6th when Munoz’s one out double led to a two out error by the Mets that allowed Munoz to score.

Duran gave Worcester some breathing room in the seventh. Ockimey walked with one out and Duran came to the plate with two out.

Duran destroyed a 1-0 pitch an estimated 440 feet to give Worcester a 7-4 lead.

The Worcester bullpen was again impressive on Thursday. It combined for 5 innings without allowing a hit and walking only one.

Matt Hall got credit for the win and Kaleb Ort, who struck out the side in order in the ninth, got his third save of the season.

The same two teams are back at it in game four of the series tonight at 6:35 PM at Polar Park.
