WORCESTER – With their season opener just one week away, the Worcester 78’s — Worcester’s only professional basketball team — has announced the first six members of their 2017-2018 roster.

Players returning to the team this season include former Coppin State standout guard Tony Gallo, former WPI guard and fourth all-time scorer in WPI history Sam Longwell, former UMASS-Lowell (D1) forward Mark Cornelius, and former Franklin Pierce University star guard Scotty Tavares-Taylor.

Newcomers include Longwell’s WPI teammate Domenick Matascusa, and former Shrewsbury high school and Worcester Academy phenom Jose Cruz, Jr.

According to team owner Tom Marino, following Sunday’s practice, the remainder of the roster will be decided.

“We will add at least six to eight guys to the team. They will all be from the area. We will have a roster of 12 plus two alternates,” Marino said.

Last season — when they were known as the New England Anchors — the team only played only 11 games. This coming season, the team is scheduled for 19 games and are working on scheduling an additional game to bring their season total to twenty [See full schedule below].

Their first game of the season is next Saturday, Nov. 4 against the Jersey Express in Paterson, New Jersey. The very next day is their first home game against the new ABA team the New England Outtatowners at Worcester’s Boys & Girls Club. That quick turnaround from Worcester to New Jersey and back to Worcester is all part of the ABA experience, according to Marino.

“We’re ‘vanning’ it. We are packing in the van, heading to Jersey early, playing our game and then getting right back in the van and on the road back to Worcester,” Marino said.

Ticket prices for the 78’s home games are $10 for adults, $5 for kids. Boys and Girls club members have free admission.
