WORCESTER – The Worcester Dual Language Magnet School, formerly Chandler Magnet School, became the target of vandalism over the weekend, with a racial slur and satanic symbol spray-painted on the back of the school.
The Worcester Police Deparment learned of the vandalism on Sunday morning. The department’s detective bureau and crime scene unit are investigating the incident. School Principal Suzanna Resendes informed parents of students at the school in a message on Sunday evening.
School officials say they covered up the vandalism before students arrived at school on Monday.
Over 85 percent of the school’s students are non-white, according to data from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
The Worcester NAACP issued a statement on Sunday which says, in part, that “the political climate, characterized by polarization and often incendiary rhetoric, can embolden individuals to express hateful ideologies, leading to harm acts within our neighborhoods.”
The Worcester Dual Magnet School, previously Chandler Magnet School, recently underwent a name change to reflect its merger with La Familia Dual Language School.
