Worcester Honors Bob Cousy with Statue Unveiling June 18

WORCESTER – The City of Worcester will honor Bob Cousy with the unveiling of a statue on Friday, June 18, at 2 PM at the DCU Center at 50 Foster St.

Cousy, his children, and many city and local officials are expected to attend the ceremony.

Cousy won six championships with the Boston Celtics in 1957, 1959, and 1960 through 1963. Cousy and three other players, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, for tenth in most championships won by a single player in NBA history.

He played 13 seasons in the NBA, all with the Celtics, voted an all-star all 13 years he played and won the NBA Most Valuable Player award in 1957. He earned Hall of Fame honors in 1971.

After retiring from playing basketball, Cousy coached the Boston College Eagles from 1963 to 1969. The team won 75 percent of its games with 114 wins and 38 losses.

Cousy is from New York and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1950 where he was a three-time all-American. He attended a White House ceremony in 2019 and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Cousy lives in Worcester and called the city home for over 70 years. Bob Cousy Court in Worcester is at Crompton Park.

Cousy turns 93 years old in August.
