U.S. News and World Report released its Best Hospitals rankings for 2021 on Tuesday, July 27. The U.S. News annual report on hospitals was first published over 30 years ago and now evaluates nearly 5,000 hospitals for its rankings report.
The report 20 hospitals to its Best Hospitals Honor Roll. Two of those were in Massachusetts, both in Boston.
U.S. News ranked Massachusetts General Hospital the fifth best hospital while Brigham and Women’s Hospital ranked 14th.
The hospitals that ranked from first to fourth, higher than Mass General, are:
- Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
- Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio
- UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, California
- Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland
The report ranks hospitals in each state that meet its standards. Of 102 Hospitals in Massachusetts, eleven met the standards to be ranked.
The rankings of each hospital included scores on a five point scale for 17 different procedures and conditions. Here is how the two hospitals ranked in Worcester, UMass Memorial Medical Center and Saint Vincent Hospital, compared in those rankings rankings.
U.S. News considers patient satisfaction data as part of their analysis of each hospital. Below are the patient satisfaction ratings for each ranked Worcester hospital on a 5-point scale.
The research also includes consideration of key services and staff. UMass nurse staffing is ranked average while Saint Vincent received an excellent rating. For patient services, researchers rated UMass as excellent while Saint Vincent received a rating of above average.
