WORCESTER – The Museum of Worcester, at 30 Elm St, holds a night of flair, history, and style to support an upcoming documentary film, “Whirlwind,” about Marshall W. “Major” Taylor, on Thursday, Aug. 28.
Attendees are encouraged to dress to embrace the spirit of the era with items like lace gloves, pocket watches, top hats, brooches, corsages, parasols, bow ties, etc.
The event will include the unveiling of a portrait painting from the collection “Resilience” by Canadian bicycling champion, businessman and artist Louis Garneau. The event will mark the transfer of the painting tot he Museum of Worcester.
Originally growing up in Indiana, Taylor left his hometown to escape the racism of the South and moved to Worcester in 1895 where he gained the title, the “Worcester Whirlwind.” Taylor eventually won the gold medal for cycling at the world championship in Montreal only four years later.
The event takes place in the Fletcher Auditorium from 5:30 Pm to 7:30 PM on Thursday, Aug. 28. Registration is required. Tickets are $35.
