WORCESTER – The Worcester Police have arrested one man and are searching for another after gunshots were fired at party on Svea St. on Vernon Hill.

According to the WPD, Xavier Perez, 21, of Lanesboro Rd., was arrested after officers responded to the area of Svea St early Saturday morning, May 11, around 1:45 AM for reports of gunshots.

A responding officer saw a black Mercedes leaving the Svea St. area at a high rate speed and followed the vehicle. The vehicle sped up and made a sharp right turn onto Esther St. trying to escape the officer. The officer was able to stop the vehicle on Henrietta St. — just a few blocks away.

When the vehicle stopped, Perez and another male exited and ran through the back yard of an apartment complex toward Vernon St. The officer chased them and the suspects separated. The officer pursued Perez  — who appeared to be holding an object in his waistband — through several residence and eventually caught him and took him into custody.

Officers searched Perez, but didn’t locate a firearm. The other male in the Mercedes has not been located.

Several witnesses told the officers that there was a party on Svea St. After a fight broke out, there were gunshots and the owner of the black Mercedes had his keys stolen from him. The shots did not hit anyone.

Perez is charged with Unarmed Robbery, Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Disorderly Conduct, and Malicious Destruction of Property Under $1200. He will be arraigned in Worcester District Court.
