Robyn Kennedy has been declared the winner of the Democratic Party primary for the 1st senate district of Worcester. Kennedy received 5,182 votes, 53.71%, of the votes in the City of Worcester.
Across the district, Kennedy has 8,038 votes (55.7%) while Worcester Mayor Joe Petty 6,397 votes (44.3%) with 99 of votes counted as of 2:30 AM on Wednesday. No candidates ran in the Republican primary for the seat, but Kennedy will face an unenrolled candidate, Lisa Mair, in the general election in November for the seat held by state Senator Harriet Chandler, who announced her retirement earlier this year.
Kennedy delivered brief remarks Tuesday night, thanking staff, supporters and Petty, among others.
In the primary for the Democratic Party nominee for Massachusetts Governor, Attorney General Maura Healey is the only candidate in the race, although Sonia Chiang-Diaz appeared on the ballot. Chiang-Diaz withdrew in June, after the deadline for finalizing the ballot.
Healey received 11,252 votes (81.29%) in Worcester. The Associated Press declared Healey the winner of the statewide primary at 8:36 PM.
In the race for the Republican nomination for governor, Geoff Diehl received 1,973 votes in Worcester, 53.66% of the total while Chris Doughty received 1,685 votes, 45.83%. The Associated Press called the race for Diehl at 9:59 PM.
The City of Worcester reports that 18,077 voters cast ballot during Tuesday’s primary election, a turnout of 16.%. Worcester has 109,137 registered voters.
Many races have only partial vote totals reported in statewide races. If the Associated Press has declared a winner in a race, we have included that information.
