Just months into the inaugural season of the Worcester Railers, the City of Worcester is getting its due as a legitimate hockey town in America.
In data expert Wallethub’s most recent report — 2017’s Best Sports Cities — Worcester is ranked #49 out of 422 cities in America for Best Hockey Cities. According to the report, Worcester’s ranking would’ve been better if there was more interest in college-level hockey in the city.
Among the five major sports — hockey, baseball, basketball, football, and soccer — Worcester ranks #204 of all cities in America, with its second-best ranking in basketball coming in at #104 thanks to its vicinity to Boston to watch Celtics games, and to Springfield — home of the National Basketball Hall of Fame. The recent addition of the Worcester 78’s, an ABA basketball team, should improve the city’s 2018 ranking.
