The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) released its 2026 College Free Speech Rankings on Monday. FIRE first released rankings in 2020.
The rankings include 257 colleges and universities nationwide, including 16 in Massachusetts, and two in Worcester, Clark University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
Both Worcester schools received a failing grade. Of the 257 schools included in the report, 166 received a failing grade.
WPI ranked 121 of the 257 in the study. Clark Clark ranked 194 of 257.
At WPI, polling for the report showed that 28% of students say they have self-censored on campus at least once or twice a month while 64% of students say
shouting down a speaker to prevent them from speaking on campus is acceptable, at least in rare cases.
At Clark, 55% of students say they have self-censored on campus at least once or twice a month while 77% of students say shouting down a speaker to prevent them from speaking on
campus is acceptable, at least in rare cases.
