WORCESTER – The City of Worcester announced that Indian Lake has reopened on Friday, Sept. 20.
The city’s Inspectional Services Department pemits the reopening of the lake following tests confirming that cyanobacteria concentrations below the state recreational threshold.
The city closed the lake on Aug. 1. The dominant cyanobacteria present were identified as the genus Planktolyngbya and genus Aphanocapsa, which have the capacity to produce toxins.
Cyanobacteria occur naturally, but at high density can produce harmful toxins.
The city produced a video series, “The Blue Space Minute,” to educate residents about cyanobacteria and associated toxins.
