WORCESTER – The Worcester Regional Transit Authority is reserving a seat on every bus during Black History Month to honor the legacy of Civil Rights Movement leader Rosa Parks.
Parks’ refusal to move to the back of the bus in Montgomery, Ala. in 1955 is considered among the pivotal moments sparking the Civil Rights Movement. Parks’ actions ignited the Montgomery Bus boycott, ultimately leading to the November 1956 decision that bus segregation is unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The seats aboard WRTA’s fixed route system will be reserved throughout the month of February as a reminder of Parks’ dedication to the equal right to public transportation.
