WORCESTER – The presidential primary election held on Tuesday, March 5, in 15 states across the U.S. In Worcester, 33,143 voters cast a ballot, a turnout of 17.29 percent, according to unofficial election totals compiled by the City of Worcester.
Presidential incumbent Joe Biden easily won the primary of Democratic Party in Worcester with 77.88 percent of the vote. The second most ballot cast, 11.o6%, were for “no preference.”
Democrats oppposed to the president’s policy towards Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip had encouraged “uncomitted” or “no preference” votes as a protest vote in some states, though there was not an organized campaign in Massachusetts encouraging the protest vote. In the Democratic Party primary in Michigan on March 1, over 100,000 primary voters selected “uncommitted,” equal to 13.2 percent of voters in that Democratic Party primary. Biden received 81.1 percent of the vote in that primary.
In the Republican Primary, former president Donald Trump received 66.54 percent of the vote. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley receives 30.09 percent, coming in second place.
Several media reports indicate Haley will announce today the suspension of her campaign.
The 33,143 primary voters that cast ballots on Tuesday is an increase from the last presidential primary in 2020, when 29,899 voted. The percentage of registered voters casting ballots decreased from 28.67 percent in 2020 to 17.29 percent on Tuesday.
