Assumption University Names its 17th President

WORCESTER – The Board of Trustees at Assumption University announced on Monday, Oct. 17, that it selected Greg Weiner, Ph.D., as the 17th president of the University.

Weiner has served as interim president since April.

Chair of the Board of Trustees Francis Bedard Esq., said Weiner “has done an outstanding job of leading the University as Interim President, furthering our mission and making strategic decisions in the best interest of Assumption and its community at large.”

After serving as a political consultant in Washington D.C. Weiner came to Assumption in 2011 as an assistant professor of political science. He was appointed associate professor and then full professor, and in 2019, became the University’s Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

At Assumption, Weiner has also served as an officer of the Representative Faculty Senate and contributed its restructuring from a college to university. The Student Government Association recognized him with its first “Above and Beyond” award for faculty. He is also the recipient of the Paul Ziegler Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship.

Weiner has written four books and published in the New York Times, Washington Post, and several national magazines. He served as communications director and policy advisor to several U.S. Senators and founded the Washington, D.C.-based speech writing firm Content Communications, LLC.

Weiner studied government while earning a bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas, Austin. At Georgetown University, he earned a master’s degree in liberal studies and a Ph.D. in government.
