WORCESTER – Cambridge Street will be closed to traffic travelling through from Chelsea Street and Canterbury Street starting on Wednesday, June 28 to enable sewer main construction. Cambridge Street will remain accessible to residents and local traffic in the area and will be opened to all traffic during non-work hours.

A detour will be in effect during the hours of 7 AM to 5 PM daily for the duration of construction, which is expected to last from three to four weeks. The detour will shift travel onto Canterbury Street to Hammond Street then onto Southbridge Street, or the reverse depending on direction.

Drivers should expect traffic delays in the area.

The sidewalk along the southern side of Cambridge Street will also remain open during construction.

The water main work is part of the “Lower Cambridge Street Sewer Rehabilitation and Inflow/Infiltration Removal” project. The project seeks to minimize the risk of structural failures and reduce groundwater infiltration into the wastewater system. The sewer work will repair identified sewer defects and reduce the likelihood of sewer collapses, blockages, basement backups, and sanitary sewer overflows.

The project is funded through federal ARPA funds.
