WORCESTER – The new unit within the Worcester Police Department (WPD), the Crime Gun Intelligence Unit (CGIU), recovered its first illegal firearm on Monday, April 15. The WPD formed the unit in response to recent gun violence in the city.

Shortly before 10 PM, CGIU detectives were responding to a ShotSpotter activation when they saw a vehicle on Channing Street with tinted windows and a tinted license plate cover. Detectives engaged the vehicle in a traffic stop.

Upon pulling behind the vehicle, which made the license plate visible, the detectives recognized the plate number matched a “be on the lookout” alert after another ShotSpotter activation on March 19.

According to the Worcester Police Department, the detectives saw the passenger in the vehicle reaching towards the back seat. Detectives asked both the driver and passenger to exit the vehicle and detained them.

During the investigation, detectives discovered a Glock 42 capable of holding over 10 rounds of ammunition.

The passenger, Suil Rosario, 19, faces charges of:

  • Unlawful Carry of a Firearm;
  • Unlawful Carry of a Firearm Loaded;
  • Possession of ammunition without FID;  and
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm.

The driver, Giancarlos Guzman, 19, faces a charge of Operating a Motor Vehicle Without a License.
