Construction Crews Making Progress at Worcester’s New Coal Mine Brook Park

WORCESTER – The land is cleaned and cleared as workers make way for the development of Worcester’s newest park at the Coal Mine Brook conservation area.

Construction at Coal Mine Brook started on July 1. Prior to being cleared, the lot between Plantation Street and North Lake Avenue was overgrown and unkept from end to end.

Now, the newly planned park promises to have spectacular views of Lake Quinsigamond, fully-accessible walkways and trails, overlooks of Coal Mine Brook and much more (see full list below).

The Coal Mine Brook is located at an end of the East-West trail network, a 14-mile trail across Worcester with its other end at the Cascades near Tatnuck Square.

Check out this map from Park Spirit of Worcester:

Last fall, the City was awarded a $750,000 National Park Service grant for the project, one of 10 in the state the Baker-Polito Administration announced would be funded through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant Program, which is administered by the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

The renovations of Coal Mine Brook funded by the grant include:

  • Construction of new, fully-accessible walkways and trails, including overlooks of Coal Mine Brook
  • Educational/environmental/wildlife kiosks at the overlooks
  • Accessible parking areas
  • Benches with available companion seating
  • Improved views of Lake Quinsigamond
  • Picnic areas, pedestrian lighting, perimeter wooden guardrails and fencing
  • Tee trimming and tree plantings
  • A playground and adult fitness area
