Last Updated: February 2, 2021

In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition — Friday, Jan. 17 —  the Little League softball World Series tourney won’t be coming to Worcester, Showcase Cinemas North is giving out free popcorn on Sunday, there’s a new video fully explaining alternate energy for Worcester, Cornerstone Bank donated a bunch of money to help folks keep warm and there are two opportunities coming up to learn about becoming a Worcester firefighter.

No Softball World Series for Worcester This Year

It’s a no-go for the city to host the 2020 Little League softball World Series tournament this year.

We’re not sure if it was a “close one,” but District 4 Little League Administrator Linda McGill confirmed to Spectrum News 1 that Worcester was passed over for the Senior Little League East Regional tournament, and that it was “disappointing.”

While there is no word yet as to where the series will be played, it has for many years taken place at Alpenrose Dairy in Portland, Oregon.

Interested in Being a Worcester Firefighter?

Everyone loves a firefighter. They’re heroes, of course. The Worcester Fire Department is holding an information session and open house to learn all about the department, the civil service process, the eligibility requirements, the entry level physical abilities test, the upcoming firefighter’s exam and a lot more. Also tour the Worcester Fire Department at 141 Grove St., Worcester, to see firsthand why people are so passionate about their career of helping and protecting others.

There are two sessions you can attend: Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM and Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10 AM to noon.

WATCH: How Does the Worcester Community Choice Electricity Aggregation Program Work?

“While the program aims to be equal to or lower than the average of the regularly fluctuating National Grid prices,” said Worcester’s Director of Energy and Asset Management John Odell, “it cannot guarantee savings because future basic service prices are unknown. You will get stable electricity supply costs. The costs will remain fixed…much longer than National Grid’s national service price, making the program different than any commercial suppliers in the marketplace.”

It’s intricate, and confusing, but not only promises to be a much greener way to go in securing your power, but likely more cost effective. Odell in a new video explains the ins and outs of what Worcester Community Choice Electricity Aggregation Program is and how it works.

Speaking of Energy, Cornerstone Bank Donation Helps Keep WCAC Clients Warm

Cornerstone recently handed $40,000 to the Worcester Community Action Council (WCAC), a contribution that will go toward assisting local residents with home heating costs. The donation supports the agency’s Emergency Fuel Assistance Fund. Every year, this fund provides critical support to clients who are most vulnerable to high home heating costs.

“WCAC is a vital organization that helps people gain economic self-sufficiency,” said Cornerstone Bank Chairman & CEO K. Michael Robbins in a statement. “We’re proud to support their mission and the many programs they provide to the community and its residents.”

“We are committed to helping our neighbors stay warm during the winter season,” added Bank President and Treasurer Todd M. Tallman.

Last winter WCAC nearly 12,000 households obtained home heating assistance through WCAC’s program, including more than 2,400 emergency fuel deliveries and utility payments. “We are most grateful for this generous donation,” said WCAC Director of Energy Resources Mary Knittle. “These funds will help support the most vulnerable in our community struggling to keep warm this winter.”

The Low Income Home Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is open Nov. 1 to April 30 each year.
