Last Updated: February 2, 2021

In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Thursday, March 12 – the St. Patrick’s parade festivities will go on at Fiddler’s Green, the Worcester County DA’s office launches overdose tracking program, a new exhibit is postponed at the Worcester Center for Crafts, the Worcester Cultural Coalition has cancelled their Legislative breakfast, and the Worcester Animal Rescue League is hosting a Kitten Shower.

The Post-Parade Party is Happening without the Parade Part

UPDATE: This event has been cancelled.

The coronavirus may have shut down the Worcester County St. Patrick’s parade on Park Ave. this year, but it’s not stopping the post-parade party.

Fiddler’s Green on Temple St. will still host their annual Post-Parade party from 2 PM to 9 PM on Sunday, March 15.

Here’s the event schedule:

  • DJ Arnie Hamm 2 PM to 3 PM
  • Worcester Police Pipes & Drums 3 PM to 3:30 PM
  • Belfast Cowboys 3:30 PM to 5 PM
  • McInerney Dancers 5 PM to 5:30 PM
  • Belfast Cowboys 5:30 PM to 8 PM
  • DJ Arnie Hamm 8 PM to 9 PM

Worcester County DA’s Office Launches Overdose Tracking Program

Police departments in all 60 of Worcester County’s cities and towns began tracking overdoses in real-time with a new program implemented by a partnership between District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr., the Central Massachusetts Chiefs of Police, local hospitals and medical providers, Sheriff Lew Evangelidis and recovery community partners.

The Critical Incident Management System [CIMS] allows law enforcement to collect overdose data and make it available in real-time to all police departments in the county. The information is then used to have a plainclothes police officer and a recovery coach reach out to the non-fatal overdose victim and offer services within 48 hours. The program allows police to identify those with substance use disorder who are most at risk and offer them treatment.

The District Attorney’s office purchased the software for $40,000 using drug forfeiture funds.

Realism Exhibit at Worcester Center for Crafts Postponed

Realism, an exhibition curated by Kat O’Connor, was scheuled to open in the Worcester Center for Crafts’ Krikorian Gallery today — Thursday, March 12 — but has been postponed to a date TBA due to the coronavirus.

This show will be on view through April 25. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM. A celebration of the curator and the artists will be held tonight at 5:30 PM along with an Artists Talk scheduled for Thursday, April 2 at 5:30 PM.

Worcester Cultural Coalition Cancels Legislative Breakfast

The City of Worcester’s Cultural Coalition [WCC] has cancelled Friday’s Legislative Breakfast in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

The WCC will be sending out information packets to legislators and will meet with elected officials to advocate on behalf of the cultural community.

The WCC board of directors will convene to discuss the economic and social impact of closing doors to public events.

WARL Hosting Kitten Shower

Yup, that’s exactly kind of what it sounds like. It’s a baby shower, but for kittens. And it’s all for a good cause.

On Saturday, April 4 from 12 PM to 2 PM, you can attend the Worcester Animal Rescue League’s Kitten Shower to help meet supply needs for their kittens.

Here’s what they need:

  • Kitten Milk Replacement Dry Formula
  • Meat-Flavored Baby Food
  • Dry Purina Kitten Food
  • Non-Clumping Kitty Litter
